1:17a - Christmas Lights
A family outing to see the Christmas lights switched on in Starbeck. Being transportationally challenged we walked up by the bus station and got a taxi, arriving at Starbeck to join a crowd of several hundred people.

Oddly enough what happened next was not a surprise to the observant -- or possibly just me. When there are vans with manned bucket-lift arms running up and down the street (not responsible practice BTW) it's a safe bet that there's something wrong. And yes, having had at least two weeks from the start of installing the lights, when the Mayor flicked the switch only two strings of Christmas lights flared into multi-coloured life. Ooops. Much 'was better than this last year' commentary, and vans swooping up and down the road with even greater urgency. After another fifteen or twenty minutes the rest of the lights were working, and Starbeck High Street looked very nice.

We'd been wondering how to get home, when John and I recalled the train at pretty much the same moment... which was when the level-crossing gates came down and the train we would have wanted to catch drew into the station. Unluckily a little too distantly for us to get to in time. Instead we crossed the road and caught a bus home.

Harrogate hasn't much in the way of Christmas lights this year. Don't ask -- between the squabbles between the shops, the Council, and some really stupid comments from the parishes it just reminds me of one thing -- common sense is very uncommon these days.

I'd like to point out the spooky connection -- that Charle's wife was called Isabeau, and so was my dog -- a French Poodle ::grins::
