And gradually the story gets written.
I've twenty-five thousand words left on my estimate -- a quarter of the projected length. I'm at one of those bits where I suspect I'm filling in things for people like me -- tidying up ends that most readers wouldn't worry about having dangling.
There's some part of me that's convinced this book is SF. Yes, it's all fairy tales and magic and non-science -- but it has ambitions! Which probably don't show. I think sometimes there's an element that the writer has in mind while they write that is scaffolding -- it's something that helps the writer cope but isn't really important to the final product. And in general it's the kind of thing where people would roll their eyes if it was too visible. (Who cares if you were thinking about how SFnal certain common fantasy elements are while you were writing it? Or if you kept looking for phrases and situations which resonated with Fairy Tales? Why no boy smoochies?).
The primary goal of fiction is to entertain. But maybe now and then it's not the main reader-entertaining narrative that's the source of the writer's fun.
